The American Hellenic Council and the Hellenic University Club honored Consul General of Greece in Los Angeles Elisavet Fotiadou for her contributions to the Arts and Hellenic Culture and for her support of the local Greek-American community.

The evening, held in Beverly Hills, showcased an exceptional performance by two famous Tango performers, Miriam Larici and Leonardo Barrionuevo of NBC's "Dancing Superstars" and "Forever Tango".

The award to Consul General Fotiadou was presented by the Honorary Consul General of Cyprus in Southern California, Mr. Andreas Kyprianides, one of the founders of the American Hellenic Council, past president of the Hellenic University Club and actively involved in our community for many years.

He hailed Mrs. Fotiadou as a very dedicated, dynamic and effective diplomat who has worked very hard to rally our community and the greater American society around the Greek Cause. He praised her many accomplishments and called her an excellent representative of Greece abroad during these very difficult times. He concluded by wishing her, to soon become the Greek Ambassador to Cyprus. He congratulated the American Hellenic Council and the Hellenic University Club, the two sponsoring organizations, for their many significant contributions to Hellenism in general and the Greek-American community in particular. And he added his special thanks and gratitude to the American Hellenic Council for its invaluable and continuous support to the just cause of Cyprus, going back to 1974 when the organization was founded in the aftermath of the Turkish invasion of the island.

Mrs. Fotiadou has indeed been very active in promoting Hellenic culture in the area and cooperating with several organizations. She has been an avid supporter of the Los Angeles Greek Film Festival, she has tirelessly worked with the Getty Museum to promote cooperation between them and the Greek Ministry of Culture and has opened her home many times to the members of the community.

The event was made possible thanks to the generosity of hosts, Dr. John and Mrs. Helen Romm, longstanding members of the AHC, who opened their beautiful home to the Greek-American community. The wines featured were provided by Athenee Importers and Michael Pavlidis and the program was presented by Patricia Kara and Ariana Savalas.

The more than 200 attendees enjoyed a wonderful evening of live music, tango performance, quality Greek wine and socializing in a beautiful setting.
